As the sporting world gears up for the Snooker Championships this year, The Winter Gardens in
Sheffield has been transformed into a mini snooker wonderland for the duration
of the Championships.
Opposite the Crucible in the city, where the tournament is being played,
It has been turned into the ‘Cue Zone’ for the public. It has been kitted out
with a full size snooker table. This way member’s of the public can get
involved with competitions, which will be aimed and all ages, with youngsters
being encouraged to have a go on the tables too.
Public Involvement
Dad from Sheffield Mike Barton said his kids were excited when they saw
the tables. “I think it’s good they’ve got the public involved, and the Championships
are very relevant to the city. People of all ages seemed keen to join in.”
A make shift TV studio has also been set up in the gardens, so the
public can watch snooker pundits such as Steve Davis and Willie Thorne discuss
various matches, live.

While the professionals such as Ronnie O’Sullivan and John Higgins
battle it out in the Championships that run from April 21 to May 7, the sponsors
Betfred are keen to get Snooker a more popular sport. The ‘Cue zone’ seems to
have done this and has drawn in many passersby.
Thomas Roberts, a snooker enthusiast from
Devonshire Quarter had a go on the tables. He said, “I think it’s great they’re
getting the public involved, it’s really helped bring more of a buzz around the
sport to the city.”
