Party plans for up and coming Diamond Jubilee

With the celebrations less than a month away communities within Sheffield are preparing for what is going to be the biggest event of the year so far.

The celebrations will be taking place throughout the whole of Sheffield with many different events and parties to mark Her majesty's 60 years on the throne. It is believed the celebrations will be bigger than last years royal wedding, with the total applications equaling already.

Over the past 5 weeks the council has received over 27 applications for street parties to mark the Diamond Jubliee, and there is still time for many more.

                                                              Queens Jubilee
Sheffield Council have already approved nine of the applications so far including:
Linscot road, Woodseats: Dobcroft road, Millhouses and Marsh House road, Ecclesall.

Many people are getting into the party spirit and are holding a number of events for the Diamond celebration.

Godery Garden centre is holding events on Sunday 4th and Monday the 5th of June.
Terry Hardwick, professional groomer said: "I will be offering half price microchipping for dogs and I will be selling union jack bandanas for dogs too! The profits of the bandana sales will be going to Thornberry Animal Sanctuary but they are in limited supply."

However although many citizens are flying the celebration flag, it comes as a shock that the decision has been made by the council to NOT hold an official city celebration. With surrounding towns civic celebrations taking place including Rotherham and Chesterfield, it has caused many groups and organisations to critize the councils decision.

Sheffield council have instead left it up to the individual communities to organise their own celebratory events for the Jubilee.

Vince McDonagh, secretary of Sheffield Joint Council of Ex Service Associations, said: “It surprises me the council is doing nothing at all - I would have thought there would have been some sort of civic commemoration."

Local resident Julie Warrington, of Patmore Road, Firth Park, where residents are currently organising a street parth for June 4th said: "We are England's fourth biggest city something should be planned, there should be some kind of acknowledgment."

Our country likes to celebrate and throw a party, people have a high level of affection for the
queen and many people have been here throughout her sixty year. Therefore the council
decison will only spur residents of Sheffield to go bigger and better and show the country
that this city is supportive.

Paul Billington, director of culture and environment for the council said: "I am confident the people of Sheffield will take this opportunity to celebrate the Jubilee and make it a special day to be remembered by everyone.”
